Hi! I’m Julia Coleman and I’m running for Chanhassen City Council.
I’m proud to have been raised by a Ramsey County Deputy Sheriff and a small business owner. I received my degree from the University of Minnesota in Political Science and Criminology. During my time at the U of M I served as the Student Body Representative to the Board of Regents, and worked for multiple branches of government; interning in the Governor’s Office and the Minnesota State Senate. I also lobbied for causes I cared about, including assistance for veterans with PTSD.
In 2014 I won the title of Miss Minneapolis, earning scholarship money to help pay for my degree. I now help run a local Miss America Scholarship program, mentoring several young women each year. I traveled the country speaking on mental health issues, and was featured in a documentary about mental health. Currently, I’m the Public Relations Manager for a healthcare association nonprofit and I’m active with the Chanhassen Lions Club, leading its committee on public relations. I’m getting married in September to Chanhassen firefighter Jake Coleman.
Now that you know a little bit about me, here’s a little bit about why I’m running:
I’ve noticed a discouraging trend of state and local governments growing bigger and bigger, encroaching on personal liberties and taking more money out of family budgets. As a city councilwoman, I will review existing government code and finances to weed out unnecessary spending and regulations.
I am also incredibly passionate about prioritizing our emergency responders. Did you know Minnesota ranks 45th in the nation in state and local government spending on firefighters? I would like to see Chanhassen serve as an example to the rest of the state on how best to serve those who serve us.
Many of my neighbors have told me they don’t hear enough about what their local government is up to, or don’t feel like their voices are being heard. As your city councilwoman, I will commit to holding open office hours every month where anyone in Chanhassen can come learn about current initiatives or share their thoughts and concerns.
I am here to serve YOU!
